| This month's feature is an addition to my April 2008 plant-of-the-month. In 2008, I reported on a 1999 Japanese book about the largest trees in Japan. I listed species, heights, trunk circumferences, and estimated ages. |
| A companion volume to the one I reported in, was published in 2005. Same author, same publisher; ISBN 4-635-06256-2. This second volume, of 846 trees (the first had 674) and 488 pages, includes certain tree species not in the first book. Also, for some species in the first book, the second book contains trees that are variously taller, thicker-trunked, or older. In my report below, I list for 96 species those citations that are in one or another such category. Unlike the second book, I exclude shrubs such as flowering quince, azalea, and vines such as wisteria and grape. |
My lengthy table below lists 96 of the trees alphabetically by Japanese names. It gives only some of the book's many measurements --tallest, stoutest and oldest. To understand the size figures in feet, multiply the metric numbers by 3.281.
